{"id":7777,"date":"2016-08-08T08:05:59","date_gmt":"2016-08-08T15:05:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.paladinregistry.com\/?p=7777"},"modified":"2016-08-08T08:05:59","modified_gmt":"2016-08-08T15:05:59","slug":"will-fed-raise-interest-rates-matter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paladinregistry.com\/blog\/investing\/will-fed-raise-interest-rates-matter\/","title":{"rendered":"Will The Fed Raise Interest Rates, And Does It Matter?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With interest rates in the U.S. remaining low for the past several years, there are some people who are worried what a <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/federal-reserve\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">potential rate hike by the Federal Reserve<\/a><\/span><\/strong> policymakers might do to the world\u2019s markets.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to say with certainty what would happen \u2013 that would depend on several factors, and the severity of the factors being implemented.\u00a0 Let\u2019s take a look at what realistically might occur:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Fed could raise interest rates slightly, and the world\u2019s investment markets will probably overreact negatively at first, then correct themselves shortly thereafter (sort of like the <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.paladinregistry.com\/investing-2\/brexit-markets-volatility-buy-sell\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cBrexit\u201d overreaction<\/a><\/span><\/strong> we just witnessed?)<\/li>\n<li>The Fed could raise interest rates slightly, and the world\u2019s investment markets won\u2019t react much at all, as it\u2019s been quite some time since a rate hike has happened (making it overdue to happen quite honestly)<\/li>\n<li>The Fed doesn\u2019t raise rates at all, and the markets are relieved. A slight rally occurs, but that\u2019s about it<\/li>\n<li>The Fed doesn\u2019t raise rates at all, and the markets move slightly negatively (or barely react at all) since there\u2019s an expectation that a rate hike should be coming in the U.S. with our continued improving economic data<\/li>\n<li>The Fed raises rates significantly (this is more unlikely than the scenarios above), and the world\u2019s investment markets will probably overreact negatively, then correct themselves several months to a year (or more) later<\/li>\n<li>The Fed raises rates significantly (this is more unlikely than the scenarios above), and the world\u2019s investment markets react very negatively at first, then don\u2019t move much over the course of the next few months\/year (or more)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Out of all of those scenarios, the last two occurring seem most unrealistic at this time because of the worry about what a significant rate hike might due to the world\u2019s markets.\u00a0 Any of the first 4 scenarios could realistically happen, and most people want to know this one thing:\u00a0 Should I be worried about my investments if there is\/isn\u2019t a Federal Reserve rate hike?\u00a0 Well, that depends on what your investment goals are with regards to your particular financial situation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you\u2019ve got more than 5 years to remain invested towards your goals, then this shouldn\u2019t anything more than a \u201cblip\u201d on your investment timeline; remain invested<\/li>\n<li>If your investment timeframe is less than 5 years, you might be tempted to think about getting out of your \u201criskier\u201d equity investments, but history has taught us that most investors sell when they should buy AND buy when they should sell (emotions can and have ruined the best of investment plans over the course of market history); remain invested<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So what should most of you do?\u00a0 Relax \u2013 take a deep breath and realize that it\u2019s usually okay to ride out almost any worrisome market \u201cevent\u201d if you have time on your side.\u00a0 Realize that \u2013 at some point in the future \u2013 the Fed will eventually raise rates (they can\u2019t stay this low forever).\u00a0 Whatever the Fed decides to do re: interest rates, you should look for any opportunities (if the markets overreact very negatively) to add to your portfolio when prices are more attractive (buy low, anyone?).\u00a0 Stay the course, and don\u2019t sell everything that\u2019s equity-related (almost always a big mistake) &#8211; you\u2019ll be glad that you did!<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t be in that group that makes emotional investment decisions \u2013 now that you\u2019re armed with this knowledge, take advantage of it and
