{"id":6560,"date":"2015-10-27T07:28:22","date_gmt":"2015-10-27T14:28:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.paladinregistry.com\/?p=6560"},"modified":"2021-01-22T01:46:48","modified_gmt":"2021-01-22T06:46:48","slug":"know-youve-invested","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paladinregistry.com\/blog\/investing\/know-youve-invested\/","title":{"rendered":"Do You Know What You\u2019ve Invested In?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I can\u2019t tell you how many times I\u2019ve had people say something to me along the lines of this:&nbsp; \u201cI\u2019m not really sure what I\u2019m invested in\u201d\u2026yikes!<\/p>\n<p>Now, not everyone wants to know what they are invested in, but that\u2019s different from at least understanding the basics about the investments you hold and why you hold them.&nbsp; This also does not excuse the <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.paladinregistry.com\/advisors-2\/financial-advisor-for-real\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">financial advisor from making sure his\/her clients get the proper disclosures on the types of investments held<\/a><\/span><\/strong> (must cover the risks associated with the different types of investments).<\/p>\n<p>It is a financial advisor\u2019s responsibility to educate his\/her clients so that they feel comfortable AND understand how the investments will help them reach their goals.&nbsp; If your financial advisor doesn\u2019t educate you, keeps you in the dark about your investments, and\/or has you investing in things that are more risky or complicated than is appropriate for your situation, chances are you need to find a \u201ctrue\u201d financial advisor who has your best interests in mind (fiduciary).<\/p>\n<p>I know many clients who say that they don\u2019t have time to read a mutual fund prospectus or would care to, but I always tell them the pluses and minuses to holding each type of investment.&nbsp; I also tell prospective clients when I see investments that don\u2019t seem to be right for their particular situation (ex: inverse and multiplier ETFs) that they should probably reconsider having those investments and\/or working with that financial advisor.&nbsp; This is especially true if the progress towards financial goals is not happening, clearly indicating a problem with the investment mix.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you know why you are invested in the manner that you are currently?<\/li>\n<li>Has your advisor gone over this with you?<\/li>\n<li>Are your financial goals clearly defined, and are you making progress towards them?<\/li>\n<li>Do you have an <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.paladinregistry.com\/investing\/communication\/investment-policy-statement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">investment policy statement<\/a><\/span><\/strong> for your financial situation, and do you review that with your financial advisor on a regular basis?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you answered \u201cno\u201d to any of these questions, either get clarification from your current financial advisor or start looking for a financial advisor who truly has your best interests at heart.<\/p>\n<p>Find an experienced financial advisor who deals with different types of quality investments on a regular basis, works for an RIA firm, earns his\/her money from fees (NOT commissions), believes in having an abundance of investment choices for clients, and has the heart &amp; demeanor of a teacher, NOT a salesman, and chances are you\u2019ve found the right financial advisor to help you prepare and plan for your financial goals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To learn more about Martin Federici, view his <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.paladinregistry.com\/financial-advisor\/dallas-pennsylvania\/Martin.Federici.Jr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paladin Registry profile<\/a><\/span>. &nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I can\u2019t tell you how many times I\u2019ve had people say something to me along the lines of this:&nbsp; \u201cI\u2019m not really sure what I\u2019m invested in\u201d\u2026yikes!
