{"id":5808,"date":"2015-05-18T05:08:22","date_gmt":"2015-05-18T12:08:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.paladinregistry.com\/?p=5808"},"modified":"2015-06-01T13:44:40","modified_gmt":"2015-06-01T20:44:40","slug":"financial-literacy-saying-what-would-mom-do","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.paladinregistry.com\/blog\/advisors\/financial-literacy-saying-what-would-mom-do\/","title":{"rendered":"Financial Literacy is Saying, &#8220;What Would Mom Do?&#8221; Before Every Purchase"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Financial literacy is important.\u00a0 Despite the nationwide push by companies, websites, the federal governments and the school systems the statistics show that not only are millions of Americans living paycheck to paycheck but they are stressed about it.\u00a0 From the housing crises, to the student loan debt problems emerging, and the establishment of hundreds of nonprofit organizations and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, established by Dodd-Frank in 2010, the problems are clear and more resources are being directed to the issues.<\/p>\n<p>The fundamental reason for most of this is that it&#8217;s just more expensive to run a household than in previous generations.\u00a0 A family of four simply didn&#8217;t have a $1,500 monthly health insurance bill a few generations ago.\u00a0 Using a <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.westandfirm.org\/docs\/Gorman-01.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">study published by the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0it shows that total spending by consumers and government combined went from $75 billion in 1970 to $1.877 trillion in 2004.\u00a0 That&#8217;s almost a 10% annualized growth rate over a 34 year time period.\u00a0 Looking further back it was just in the 1930s when <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/healthcarecrisis\/history.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">insurance against the cost of health care was first introduced by Blue Cross<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong>, and in the early 1900s it was commonly accepted in society that doctors would provide services to those in the hospital free!<\/p>\n<p>In addition to health care there are items like a vehicle per person, cell phones, cable tv, internet access, liability insurance, even gym memberships and many others that by historical standards are new expense but widely considered necessary.\u00a0 Believe it or not <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.gyminsight.com\/859-most-current-fitness-industry-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">gym memberships only recently started in the early 1980s and now represents over 50 million people<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>So literacy is important however households can have access to all the financial education they can get their hands on, and the internet provides more than they could ever consume, but at the end of the day it comes down to sacrifices.\u00a0 When it comes to accomplishing your financial goals unless there is an asset or inheritance, business, or invention that is providing your wealth independent of your salary everything comes down to cash flow and time.\u00a0 Maintain positive cash flow, put that surplus in productive places, and wait.\u00a0 And then repeat.\u00a0 And unfortunately sometimes it&#8217;s not even that straightforward with events like disease, disability and accidents.<\/p>\n<p>So what can you do?\u00a0 Thankfully we live in a country with a lot of support for people in need and resources from organizations that provide direction.\u00a0 If you are looking for education try the <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nefe.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">National Endowment for Financial Education<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0or the <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/financiallit.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Institute for Financial Literacy<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0or through the federal government there is the <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumerfinance.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Consumer Financial Protection Bureau<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0 Also there is the option of working with an accountant and Certified Financial Planner (CFP\u00ae) on your personal finances.\u00a0 Whatever you do though, don&#8217;t stop looking for ways to accomplish your goals.\u00a0 Have debt?\u00a0 Keep in touch with the lenders and the banks for options.\u00a0 Looking to monitor your cash flow better?
